Viniyoga Therapy

Rooted in the lineage of Krishnamacharya and informed by the teachings of my mentor, Chase Bossart of the Yoga Well Institute, a longtime student of T.K.V. Desikachar, I offer Yoga Therapy in the Viniyoga tradition. As a Certified Yoga Therapist (C-IAYT) and Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT-500), I bring over 25 years of experience to this work. My approach is highly personalized and breath-centered, supporting individuals on their path to physical and emotional healing. Whether you're living with chronic pain, navigating stress, anxiety, major life transitions, or seeking to improve communication and deepen relationships, our work together emphasizes meaningful connection and practices tailored specifically to you.

Therapeutic Viniyoga

Therapeutic Viniyoga is a personalized, adaptive approach to yoga that is used for healing and addressing specific physical, mental, or emotional conditions. It draws from the Viniyoga tradition of Mr. TKV Desikachar and Krishnamacharya, which emphasizes individualized instruction, breath-centered practice, and integration of yoga tools (like movement, breath work, sound, and meditation) to support the unique needs of each person.

Yoga Therapy

Yoga therapy is the specific application of yogic tools- asana (movement), prāṇayama (breath), meditation, and mantra (sound) designed to address your unique physical, mental, and emotional needs. Yoga Therapy uses a holistic approach guided by the Pañcamaya model to assess health and wellness at the physiological (annamaya), energetic (prāṇamaya), mental (manomaya), personality (vijñānamaya), and emotional (ānandamaya) levels.

The Impact of Therapeutic Viniyoga on State Change

While many studies have discussed the effectiveness of interventions using different yoga techniques and teachings with various populations, there has been less research on the effectiveness of personalized yoga therapy. Viniyoga therapists utilize the principles of Viniyoga therapy, a type of yoga developed by Krishnamacharya, to provide therapeutic yogic interventions to individual clients in order to improve functioning and relieve suffering. This qualitative study conducted interviews with fourteen Viniyoga trained yoga therapists to understand the impact of Viniyoga therapy on state change. State change is defined as either a physical or psychological change that improved well-being, ameliorated suffering, or increased insight for the client. The researchers employed an in-depth semi-structured interview format, utilizing open-ended questioning. A definition of Viniyoga therapy was developed, and distinctions were made between yoga therapists and yoga teachers. Subjects interviewed discussed the results of their interventions using the 5-dimensional pañcamaya model, which considers a client’s structure, physiology, mind, personality, and emotions. Viniyoga therapists drew upon their own observations as well as clients’ self-reported data. Results were analyzed using NVivo software and based on principles of Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis. Five important themes emerged: 1) Viniyoga empowers clients to actively participate in their own process of state change by training their self-observation skills and providing tools for influencing their state 2) Intentionally engineered experiences serve as the tools of Viniyoga therapy 3) Viniyoga takes a highly individualized approach to supporting state change 4) The relationship between the client and the Viniyoga therapist plays a crucial role in promoting state change, which is very important to the state change process 5) State change is foundational to the healing process of Viniyoga therapy. The study concluded that Viniyoga therapy can be beneficial in creating state change and alleviating distress related to a wide range of physical and psychological conditions, highlighting its importance, especially in yoga for mental health. Implications for yoga therapy as an integrative and complementary health approach are discussed.

How Viniyoga supports health and healing

In this qualitative study, the impact of therapeutic Viniyoga therapy on health and healing was explored from the perspective of 14 Viniyoga therapists. These therapists were interviewed about their perceptions of how personalized yoga therapy contributes to the health and healing of their clients. A philosophical definition of Therapeutic Viniyoga was developed. Three key themes related to health and healing emerged from the Viniyoga therapists' insights using NVivo and Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis procedures: the definition of health is unique to each person, healing is broadly defined as positive change, and healing occurs in stages. Four case studies illustrate how yoga therapy appeared to affect the health and healing trajectories of the clients of the interviewed yoga therapists. The study suggests that Viniyoga therapy benefits the overall health of clients and supports the healing of various physical and psychological conditions, particularly highlighting its relevance in yoga for mental health. Additionally, the implications for yoga therapy as an integrative and complementary health and wellness approach using multidisciplinary collaboration are discussed.

Exploring the practice of one-to-one therapeutic Viniyoga

Therapeutic Viniyoga is a holistic approach, with the treatment, starting point, progression, and goals uniquely tailored to each individual client. This study employs Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) and directed content analysis to combine theory and practical application, providing a tangible, conceptually grounded understanding of one-to-one Viniyoga therapy. The therapeutic application of Viniyoga is examined through the experiences of trained Viniyoga therapists. Fourteen therapists were interviewed, and their transcripts were analyzed using NVivo and IPA to extract key themes. Six primary themes emerged: three conceptual processes underpinning the therapeutic application of Viniyoga and three technique descriptions. The process themes include: Theme 1 - daily practice, Theme 2 - self-observation, and Theme 3 - state change. The techniques are categorized as: Theme 4 - breath work, Theme 5 - movement, and Theme 6 - meditation/attention. Each therapist also shared insights on two client cases. Qualitative directed content analysis was performed on 29 client cases to illustrate and elaborate on these identified themes. The diverse client case presentations encompassed a wide range of physical and psychological issues, highlighting the effectiveness of personalized yoga therapy. The therapeutic relationships varied in duration from weeks to over a decade, showcasing how initial daily personal practices were completely customized to each individual. Most cases did not resemble traditional yoga but instead emphasized unique approaches to breathwork, movement, and attention tailored to the client. Among the 13 instances of the process of client self-awareness, five pertained to aspects of the personal practice, while eight referred to self-awareness in daily life. Observations of state change were recorded across all five dimensions of the Pañcamaya model of human experience, including physical (body and breath - 9 examples), mind (13 examples), emotions (3 examples), and behavior (4 examples). This qualitative investigation reveals the significance of Viniyoga therapy for mental health and provides valuable insights into its effectiveness.

Therapeutic goals of one-on-one Viniyoga: A qualitative study of practitioner perspectives and case

Background/Objectives: Viniyoga therapy is a person-centered approach to yoga that highlights the importance of personalized yoga therapy, adapting breath, movement, and meditative practices to foster health and well-being. This qualitative study explores the therapeutic goals of one-to-one Viniyoga from the perspectives of experienced therapists. Methods: Fourteen certified Viniyoga practitioners participated in in-depth interviews, which were analyzed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). This study elucidates how Viniyoga therapists define therapeutic Viniyoga. Results: The findings reveal three core therapeutic goals that guide Viniyoga therapy: restoring balance, cultivating self-regulation, and guiding transformation. Two case studies are presented to demonstrate the application of these goals in clinical contexts, particularly highlighting yoga for mental health. Conclusions: The qualitative insights from the interviewed Viniyoga therapists underscore the beneficial role of individualized Viniyoga therapy in achieving sustainable healing and aiding clients' return to balance, self-regulation, and personal transformation. The Viniyoga therapeutic model is effective across diverse populations and can be integrated into various complementary healthcare settings.

The Role of Yoga Therapy Across Health Conditions: Insights from the Pañcamaya Framework & Tri Krama

This study examines the impact of personalized yoga therapy interventions on yoga therapists and their clients across various health conditions. It explores which conditions they address, what practices they use, and how they perceive change through the lens of the pañcamaya model, a traditional yogic framework that describes five interconnected layers of human experience: structural (annamaya), physiology (prāṇamaya), mind (manomaya), personality (vijñānamaya), and emotions (ānandamaya). The tri krama model is applied to enhance the understanding of Viniyoga therapy interventions for treating illness (Cikitsā krama), preventing illness (Rakṣaṇa krama), and developing capacities (Śikṣaṇa Krama). A convergent mixed-methods design was employed. A Qualtrics survey was distributed to certified yoga therapists through professional networks. Quantitative data included conditions treated and tools used (e.g., movement, breathwork, meditation). Thematic analysis was selected to identify recurring patterns in qualitative responses while preserving the depth of individual insights. Quantitative and qualitative data were integrated using a side-by-side joint display to examine relationships between practices and perceived effects. Findings suggest that therapists perceive yoga therapy interventions as promoting improvements in physiological symptoms, emotional well-being, mental clarity, and inner resilience, including benefits for clients with chronic or terminal illness. Therapists’ perspectives highlight the multidimensional impact of yoga for mental health and overall health. The pañcamaya model offers a valuable lens for understanding healing beyond symptom relief, supporting the integration of holistic frameworks into health research.

Exploring Yoga Therapists’ Perceptions of the Impact of Therapeutic Interventions on Health

Personalized yoga therapy is a tailored, integrative approach rooted in traditional Indian medicine, designed to complement modern allopathic healthcare. Although the benefits of practices like Viniyoga therapy are widely supported anecdotally, limited empirical research has examined yoga therapists’ experiences with yoga therapy within the pañcamaya model’s multidimensional framework. This mixed-methods study employed univariate analysis, bivariate analysis with Fisher’s exact test, and thematic analysis to explore how yoga therapists (n=69) perceive the impact of their personal therapeutic yoga practices on various health conditions and life dimensions, including yoga for mental health. Quantitative findings demonstrated varied therapist perspectives on the benefits of a personal yoga therapy practice. Qualitative results revealed yoga therapy goals across the tri krama model: Cikitsā krama goals focus on therapeutic healing and recovery, including (1) pain relief and physical healing, (2) emotional and mental health, (3) holistic balance, and (4) functional recovery; Rakṣaṇa krama goals emphasize protection and preservation, supporting ongoing wellness through (1) physical strength and graceful aging, (2) mental and emotional stability, and (3) self-awareness and sustainable routines; and Śikṣaṇa krama goals promote refinement, encouraging growth and learning in (1) spiritual development, (2) the study of yogic philosophy and sacred texts, and (3) the integration of yoga into daily life and work. Therapists’ experiences suggest that yoga therapy supports holistic well-being throughout the system, offering a comprehensive and adaptable approach to health and personal development. We build on these findings by offering suggestions for interprofessional collaboration among healthcare providers.
